The Trek Domane SL 5 Gen 5 pairs a 500 Series OCLV Carbon frame with a 12-speed Shimano 105 drivetrain and tubeless ready Bontrager Paradigm 23 wheels. Clearance for 40 mm tyres and a 20 mm rise cockpit make it a comfortable endurance bike for long road days and light gravel.
The Trek Domane SL 5 Gen 5 is the accessible entry into the fifth generation Domane platform, and it carries the same frame technology, geometry and tyre clearance as the models above it. The frame is 500 Series OCLV Carbon with internal cable routing, a T47 threaded bottom bracket, UDH rear dropout, integrated chain keeper, mudguard mounts and integrated frame bag mounts. A complete ML build weighs 8.84 kg with sealant and no tubes. Road Endurance Geometry gives a taller stack and a stable front end, so the position stays comfortable across long days without feeling slow or vague when the pace lifts.
This generation drops IsoSpeed in favour of a lighter, simpler construction. Comfort now comes from smart carbon layup, a round 27.2 mm Bontrager carbon seatpost with 8 mm offset that flexes vertically to absorb road chatter, and the volume of the fitted 35 mm tyres. Trek’s testing puts vibrational energy performance within 5% of the previous generation on spec tyres, so the ride quality riders associate with the Domane name stays intact while the bike sheds weight and moving parts. The overall feel is snappier and more direct, with less to service and fewer places for road grit to hide.
Shifting comes from a full 12-speed Shimano 105 R7120 mechanical group with 105 R7100 cranks in 50/34 compact form and an 11-34 cassette. Crank length scales with frame size, running 160 mm on XS and S, 165 mm on M and ML, and 170 mm on L and XL. That gearing spread covers steep climbs and fast descents without needing a change of chainring, and mechanical shifting means no charging routine, no proprietary batteries and simple roadside adjustment. A Praxis T47 threaded bottom bracket keeps the bearing interface serviceable and quiet, which matters on a bike likely to see wet winter roads.
Wheels are built on Bontrager alloy sealed bearing hubs with Paradigm 23 tubeless ready rims, 24 hole and 23 mm wide, laced with 14 g stainless spokes. The rims are shod with Bontrager Kwaremont Pro tyres in 700×35 mm, tubeless ready with GR puncture protection, an aramid bead and a 120 tpi casing. Set up tubeless with TLR sealant, these run at lower pressures than a traditional 25 mm road tyre, which transforms grip and comfort on broken tarmac. Frame clearance extends to 40 mm if you want to push further onto crushed gravel and farm roads. Shimano CL700 rotors at 160 mm handle braking, with room for 180 mm at the front.
The cockpit is a large part of why the Trek Domane SL 5 Gen 5 suits long distance riding. The Bontrager Comp Riser bar adds 20 mm of rise with a short 70 mm reach, lifting the hoods without a stack of spacers or a flipped stem. Bar width scales through the size range from 36 cm on XS to 42 cm on XL, and a Trek RCS Pro stem at negative 7 degrees keeps the front end clean. Trek gel cork tape and a Verse Short Comp saddle with 145 mm width round out the contact points. For wider reading on endurance road bike positioning and tyre pressure, see the road cycling coverage at BikeRadar.
Practical details matter on a bike used for real distance. The Trek Domane SL 5 Gen 5 carries two bottles inside the frame and takes a frame bag, triangle bag and top tube bag on every size except XS, which accepts a triangle bag and top tube bag. Mudguard mounts front and rear make it a genuine year round option, and Bontrager Switch chamfered thru axles with a removable rear lever speed up wheel changes. Six frame sizes cover the same rider range as the previous 47 to 62 line up, with sizing down giving a more aggressive fit and sizing up a more relaxed one.
