The Trek Procaliber 9.6 Gen 3 2026 in Dark Star is a race-ready carbon XC hardtail featuring the new IsoBow technology for trail vibration damping, a 120mm RockShox Reba RL fork, SRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 12-speed drivetrain, and SRAM DB 6 4-piston brakes — a complete, fast, and capable hardtail built for riders who demand race performance and real trail confidence.
The hardtail cross-country mountain bike has always been the purist’s choice — lighter, simpler, and more efficient than full-suspension alternatives, with a directness of feel that rewards skilled, aggressive riding. The Trek Procaliber 9.6 Gen 3 2026 in Dark Star takes that philosophy and pushes it further than ever, combining a completely new OCLV Mountain Carbon frame with Trek’s innovative IsoBow technology, a 120mm RockShox Reba RL fork, SRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 12-speed drivetrain, and a dropper post as standard into a race-ready package that genuinely raises the bar for what a carbon XC hardtail can offer at this level.
Dark Star is a deep, premium black colourway with a subtle presence — clean, focused, and serious. A finish that lets the engineering do the talking.
Introducing the Gen 3 Procaliber — More Travel, New Technology, Lower Weight
The Gen 3 Procaliber represents the most significant overhaul of the Procaliber platform to date. Trek’s engineers have completely redesigned the frame, adding 120mm of front suspension travel — up from the previous generation — to reflect the reality that modern XC courses are longer, rougher, and more technically demanding than ever. The slacker head tube angle compared to most XC bikes pairs with the additional fork travel to create a bike that is calm and confident at speed, encouraging riders to push harder and carry more momentum through technical terrain.
The overall geometry has been updated to match contemporary XC race standards, with a balance between aggressive climbing efficiency and genuine trail capability that allows this bike to excel across a wide range of terrain types and race formats.
OCLV Mountain Carbon Frame with IsoBow Technology
The structural foundation of the Procaliber 9.6 Gen 3 is Trek’s OCLV Mountain Carbon frame — OCLV standing for Optimum Compaction, Low Void, Trek’s proprietary carbon manufacturing process that produces consistently high-quality, lightweight carbon structures with exceptional structural integrity. Trek’s mountain-specific OCLV carbon uses unique fibre materials and lay-up procedures developed specifically for the demands of trail riding, delivering a frame that is both lighter and tougher than conventional carbon construction.
The defining technology on this new generation of Procaliber is IsoBow — a cleverly engineered frame feature that extends the seat stays beyond the seat tube junction, allowing the rear triangle to flex vertically and absorb trail vibration and chatter without compromising the lateral stiffness required for powerful pedalling. This flex-and-damp action takes the edge off rough surfaces, reduces rider fatigue over longer efforts, and keeps the rear wheel in better contact with the ground for improved traction.
Critically, Trek has also relocated the rear brake caliper mount. Rather than attaching to the seat stay — which would restrict its ability to flex — the caliper is mounted to an extension of the rear axle. This means the seat stay can flex freely to absorb vibration without any negative effect on braking consistency or modulation. It is a small but beautifully considered engineering detail that shows how much thought has gone into making IsoBow work correctly at every level.
The frame also features a tapered head tube for improved steering stiffness, full internal cable routing for a clean aesthetic and reduced maintenance, and a Boost148 rear axle standard for enhanced drivetrain stiffness and tyre clearance.
RockShox Reba RL Fork — 120mm of XC-Capable Front Suspension
The front suspension on the Procaliber 9.6 Gen 3 is the RockShox Reba RL, offering 120mm of travel with a DebonAir air spring and Motion Control damper. The DebonAir spring provides a remarkably supple, responsive feel from the very first millimetre of travel, keeping the front wheel in contact with the trail through rocky, rooted sections and delivering a noticeably smoother ride quality than conventional coil or basic air spring alternatives. The Motion Control damper is adjustable and reliable, and a manual lockout gives you firm, efficient pedalling on smooth climbs or road transfers where suspension compliance would work against you. The 15mm Maxle Stealth thru-axle ensures precise, rattle-free wheel retention.
At 120mm of travel, the Procaliber 9.6 Gen 3 has more front-end compliance than many XC hardtails, yet retains the efficiency and directness that define the hardtail XC experience. It is a meaningful step forward in the capability of this platform without compromising what makes it fast.
SRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 12-Speed Drivetrain — Precision Shifting on Every Climb
Gear shifting on the Procaliber 9.6 Gen 3 2026 is handled by the SRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 12-speed mechanical transmission. The T-Type designation refers to SRAM’s latest generation of derailleur interface and chain system, originally developed for their AXS electronic groupsets and now brought to their mechanical range for improved chain retention, shifting precision, and efficiency. The SRAM Eagle XS-1270 T-Type cassette spans a 10-52 tooth range — one of the widest gear ranges available on any 12-speed drivetrain — giving riders a low enough gear to tackle the steepest technical climbs and a high enough gear to sprint freely on flat or descending terrain.
The SRAM Eagle 70 crank runs a 32-tooth chainring with a 55mm chainline and SRAM DUB bottom bracket interface, delivering a reliable, stiff, and efficient power transfer platform. The T-Type chain and cassette combination is engineered for exceptional chain retention and smooth indexing under load, making this one of the most capable mechanical drivetrains available at this price point.
SRAM DB 6 4-Piston Hydraulic Disc Brakes
Stopping power is delivered by SRAM DB 6 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes. Four-piston calipers provide significantly more braking force and better heat management than two-piston alternatives, making them the correct choice for XC racing where short, powerful braking events are common and precision matters. The DB 6’s consistent lever feel and reliable, all-conditions performance ensure you can brake later and with more confidence on every descent.
Bontrager Kovee Comp 25 Wheels and Dropper Post as Standard
The Procaliber 9.6 Gen 3 2026 rolls on Bontrager Kovee Comp 25 Tubeless Ready wheels, paired with Bontrager Sainte-Anne Pro XR 29×2.40″ tubeless-ready tyres. The 25mm internal width wheelset provides a solid platform for modern XC rubber, and the tubeless-ready setup out of the box means lower rolling resistance and greatly reduced puncture risk on race day and beyond.
A Bontrager Line dropper post is included as standard — recognising that even on a hardtail, the ability to drop the saddle quickly for technical descents is no longer optional for riders who want to ride aggressively and safely. Internal dropper post routing keeps the cable neatly tucked away throughout the frame.
